Eastwood Speaks

In case anyone missed it -- presumably because of trying to smother her/himself with a pillow during the RNC -- Clint spoke at the convention last night, addressing Imaginary Obama in an empty chair (and rambling on for so long they couldn't show the Movie of Mitt in prime time). It's become quite an internet meme, and it's pretty damn funny. Chris Rock tweeted "Eastwood on phone to Obama after speech: it went as planned, sir."

But I think the above sees it most clearly, as metaphor for what's motivating teabaggers.

(For the record, I admire Eastwood a lot for his movie-making, producing ones that are thought-provoking and, even, daring.)

  1. OK, I'll admit it, (and this is from someone who saw "Bronco Billy" in the Theater)
Clint was embarassing, and whoever did his makeup for "Gran Torino" should have got an Oscar...
Seriously, a dug up Ronaldus Reagan would have looked younger.
Reminded me of that Grand Rounds(Whats so Grand bout' Grand Rounds anyway?)when the Surgeon-Past-His-Prime-who-just-discovered-Powerpoint gave a great 20 minute lecture on Pulmonary Embolisms...
Too bad it was 90 minutes with the Simpson's sound effects/Far Side Cartoons...

  2. I always knew he was a conservative, but I thought he was one of the Goldwater variety. It's sad that this episode will likely be a great part of his legacy.

  4. Another friend put it even more succinctly. "Empty suit upstaged by empty chair." I do like this one a lot, though.

  5. I haven't watched the entire Clint digression, but from what I have seen of it I honestly don't think Eastwood has been paying attention to politics lately, and he thinks Romney is Nelson Rockefeller.

He appears to view the Repuglican ticket as a benign team aiming to bring us back to the good old days, rather than launching us into a corrupt plutocracy. He obviously doesn't realize how many of Obama's shortcomings are directly caused by blockheaded congressional Repuglicans.
Eastwood is a nice enough old guy who is just out of touch with reality. Kind of sad....
