The Dickhead Is Wearing Me Down

If my ones of readers have noticed I'm mainly posting my weekly newspaper column lately, it's because so much news and opinion, all of it more salient than mine, is out there. Also, it seems almost foolish to concentrate on one outrage among the daily flood of so many. Which, I guess, is the desired result of the outrages. Mea sucka.

Which is not to say I'm planning to stop the column, nor am I ending the blog. (A sigh of relief, loud enough to be heard for inches, is raised.) But firing off a statement about something as it happens, while possibly de-stressing for me, has started to feel a little self-indulgent. Why read me, for example, when Charles P. Pierce is out there? At best, I feel I'm only paraphrasing or repurposing what smarter and more connected people than I have written.

That said, I liked posting the title picture.

  1. Hi Sid,
I enjoy reading your blog. I like your style and I agree with your politics. You do a nice job of giving voice to what a lot of us feel, but cannot express as elegantly as you. Having said that, I have been wondering how long you could keep it up, what with the loony in charge of the asylum. You'll need to keep your powder dry and save your fire for the most egregious violations. Can't let the bastards grind you down!
    Best Regards,

  3. Sid, I am just going to let Bill say it all for me. You are a good man but I completely understand the need to take a break from the insanity. Besides, I am starting understand that many of these Trump "shock events" are meant to try to divert us away from Brannon. This is starting to feel like a more outrageous version of Bush/Cheney, where Bush was the figurehead and Cheney set the agenda.

I'll keep checking in. All my best. Todd

  4. Really, this wasn't a call for compliments. I think it was more about saying something while I felt there was nothing to say. Since then I've written, but haven't yet published, a couple of thingsl

  5. I'm just one guy, but I would be disappointed if you stopped the blog.

  6. Thanks, Prof. Not really planning on shutting down. Just wondering what it's all about.

  7. I figured I'd post the whole article...I can empathize with you brother.

"Outgoing “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart is opening up about his decision to leave the political comedy program, saying the part of the job requiring him to constantly watch cable news is “incredibly depressing.”

“I live in a constant state of depression,” Stewart told The Guardian. “I think of us as turd miners. I put on my helmet, I go and mine turds, hopefully I don't get turd lung disease.”

After skewering politicians on the nightly satirical newscast for the better part of two decades, Stewart said he arrived at the decision gradually.

“These things are cyclical,” he said. “You have moments of dissatisfaction, and then you come out of it and it’s OK. But the cycles become longer and maybe more entrenched, and that’s when you realize, ‘OK, I’m on the back side of it now.’ ”

He said he found himself less than enthusiastic about the prospect of covering a fifth presidential election.

“I’d covered an election four times, and it didn’t appear that there was going to be anything wildly different about this one,” he told The Guardian.

Even so, Stewart — who admittedly leans liberal in his own politics — said he doesn’t think the long-running show has lost a step.

“It’s not like I thought the show wasn’t working any more, or that I didn’t know how to do it. It was more, ‘Yup, it’s working. But I’m not getting the same satisfaction.’ ”

Comedy Central announced last month that South African comedian Trevor Noah would take Stewart’s place after he leaves the show later this year.

  8. Late to the conversation, but joining in with understanding your point and hoping you'll still hang around. I find that almost nothing I say is as eloquent as that others have already written (including YOU) and that my "personal essay" blog about every day observations could easily turn into a political screed because nothing else seems important right now....every day observations pale in comparison to the debacle unfolding.... Let's all try to hand on. DW
