Feynman was a Nobel Prize winning physicist, among many other things. Among my favorite quotes of his, regarding religious belief and skepticism, is "I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong."
"The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it." Orwell
"“The price good men pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”
Plato
"The secret of freedom lies in educating people, whereas the secret of tyranny is in keeping them ignorant" Robespierre

Feynman is one of a handful of personal heroes. The book Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman was one of the highlights of high school.
ReplyDeleteA comic book about his life came out recently. I think his daughter was involved with it and thus it contains somewhat different anecdotes, and a different perspective, than Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman. It's also better organized. My mother got it for my son and it is with some shame that I admit I didn't pass it on to him right away.
