Overwhelmingly Catholic Ireland has, by national referendum, overwhelmingly (62% yes!) approved same sex marriage. Not only that, when the results were in, this is what the leader of the "no" movement had to say:
Amazing. No threats, no predictions of end-times. Just simple recognition of the outcome of a fair election, and the implicit acknowledgment that that's how democracy works.
Can anyone imagine such a response to such a vote in the US?
