Death At Death's Door

[Take your pic pick. Couldn't decide.]

A doctor friend working in a Texas hospital foretells rationing ventilators, as Covid-19 patients overrun their ICUs. Who, he asks, should be denied? Vaccination refusers? Other than being partially-innocent victims of well-organized lying, their primacy on the rejection list is compelling. The brainwashed don’t know they’re brainwashed, but, as ubiquitous evidence makes persisting ignorance indefensible, sympathy wanes.

They sent a Covid patient to North Dakota for care. Needing a ventilator for non-Covid illness, another Texan had to be airlifted 150 miles; prior to which he required approval by a team husbanding the scarce resources. It’s Sarah Palin’s death panels, incarnate; necessitated by people made unable to process information. Unlike the stuff of her disordered mind, this is real. Texas’ Trumpicly irresponsible governor now begs smarter states to send help.

Why it’s happening is obvious. Trump’s pandemic ignorance and lies and inattention showed Republican leaders a winning strategy: To keep people distracted from their pre-failed economic agenda, and sending money, make it about “freedom,” or “communism.” Or, a perfect exemplar of effective disinformation, believing “Critical Race Theory” is taught in K-12 schools. Hint: It isn’t.
“Unmasked, Unmuzzled, Unvaccinated, Unafraid,” say their T-shirts. Translation: “Uninformed, Uneducated, Unreachable, Uncaring.” “I do my own research” – a claim that refutes itself.

So successful is it that, dismissing massive contrary documentation, Trumpublicans still believe vaccines and masks are ineffective and/or dangerous; liberal “wokeness” signifiers. Had Trump, Trumpophile governors, and their media heroes urged their victims to pitch in, as Americans amidst crises always have, this Delta-variant siege wouldn’t have happened. Viruses spread -- and mutate -- among the unvaccinated. Deeming it acceptable collateral damage, Trump’s party has become a killer party. Why? Consider who benefits.

As their media stars pound rare breakthrough cases among the vaccinated, widespread deaths and deathbed regrets of anti-vaxers are ignored. Consumers only of Trump-approved news sources may have missed these data from the CDC, current as of July 31:

Of the 164m fully vaccinated in the U.S., 99.9% have NOT tested positive for Covid-19. Breakthrough cases represent .077%. Hospitalized: .004%. Died: .001%.

In contrast, 99% of those hospitalized and/or dying of Covid-19 are unvaccinated. A Florida church just lost six parishioners in ten days; four under thirty-five. Previously healthy. Unvaccinated.

Given those numbers, who of right mind refuses vaccination and masks? Trumpists. Among whom, because of disturbingly easy and successful mass deception, it appears no right minds remain. Killing thousands, manipulated and abandoned, for the most cynical of reasons: payola for bankrollers.

For decades, having nothing else to offer, Republicans created a human variant disinterested in truth; not changing course even as their voters are endangered. Only in a killer party could that be considered leadership.

On fawning media, Trump blames President Biden for the resurgence. Unlike Trump, he made vaccination widely available, fast, and urged it. Biden’s fault, says Trump, while his blinded flock refuse vaccination and masks, enabling Delta’s rise.

What hope is there for a county in which millions of such zombified people exist? (Bad analogy. They’re not eating brains, they’re offering their own to their leaders for lunch.) Evidence, mounting hourly, is ignored. And, no: evolving recommendations don’t validate their disbelief. It’s science: seeking and remaining open to new information. Why has that become “conservative” anathema?

Proving the point is a quote for our times, forced from lungs filling with Covid-19, spoken by a 31-year-old man in Branson, MO: “I was strongly against getting the vaccine,” Barker said through labored breathing. “Just because we’re a strong conservative family.” That’s Trumpofoxification in the mortifying flesh. What Trumpian acolytes have done is criminal. Murder most literal.

That poor guy is a victim of Trumpism. This one isn’t: a smug, bullying, attention-seeking, taxi-driving avatar for all of Trumpworld, who refuses masked or vaccinated passengers. Patriotic. Heroic.

For needed karmic relief, Texas Republicans provide: Covid-19 has derailed (temporarily, no doubt) their determination to suppress Democratic votes; the only way they can keep winning.

There are much worse and deadlier issues, though: Whereas the pandemic might end up killing only a million or two Americans, the latest IPCC report shows climate change on a trajectory to kill far more.

Unlike his pandemic dereliction, Trump’s climate denial isn’t wholly responsible. But he and his party did less than nothing about it: deregulating, dissembling, deceiving. Departing accords. All for fossil-fuel money. And to “stick it to the libs.” If that’s both murderous and suicidal, their reactionary inaction on climate change is pan-humanity genocidal.

Unconvinced by heatwaves, drought, acidifying oceans, dying reefs, wildfires, starvation, dried-up rivers and reservoirs, melting glaciers and methane-spewing tundra, Trumpists continue to laugh it off.

Against such radical resistance to reality, what can thoughtful citizens, actual patriots, do? Minimize energy use. Make it green as possible. And, since Trumpists are irretrievably uneducable, stop electing them. Until Texas, et. red, make that impossible, too.

  1. Well said, Doctor. The only rational reason for the seemingly incoherent and insane views absorbed and spewed by the Trumpublicans is they are brainwashed cult members who seek and find the validation they seek in the incoherence and insanity. You know, just like organized religion eats the brains of its acolytes. Like so many 'Murricans, it has infected some of the people I love and care about and makes me ache for some kind of massive epiphany to roll them into the mud for an honest realization about their behavior. Alas and alack, I'm not holding my breath.

    2. This is loosely related in that it asks the question.

"When have you done all you can? When is it time to let them live or die on their own?"

As a Marine, this pisses me off. The Afghans have had everything handed to them and can't defend themselves. Many never thought we'd leave is a reason. Well, America is leaving and if they can't defend themselves then they can live under Taliban rule. Trillions of dollars. American lives. 20 years. Sorry, but they can just live with their choices and they had ample support and warning.

"As the Taliban blitz across Afghanistan and U.S. officials scramble to assess just how quickly the government in Kabul could fall, President Joe Biden is recalibrating his message to Americans."

Yeah, they can go pound sand from here on out. This HAS TO STOP.

"Where he once insisted that two decades of U.S. backing had left Afghan forces capable of defending themselves, Biden and his aides have shifted to a more cold-blooded mantra: If they can’t, that’s not our problem."

Remind us of any covid deniers?

“I do not regret my decision,” Biden told reporters Tuesday, after pointing out that the U.S. has spent more than a trillion dollars and lost thousands of its own troops to train and equip Afghanistan’s military.

By October we will be gone basically. A lot of military and civilians will be able to say "Merry Christmas" again thanks to Joe.

“Afghan leaders have to come together,” he said. “They've got to fight for themselves, fight for their nation.”

Duh? After 20 years I think they are about to find out the hard way.

"But those promises are not entirely reassuring to many on Capitol Hill and beyond. Some critics fear a reprisal of what happened in Iraq after the U.S. withdrew troops in 2011: the rise of the Islamic State, which forced Washington to send troops back in to fend off the terrorist group."

      Oh PALEEEZ!

“No one should pretend they’re surprised the Taliban is winning now that we abandoned our Afghan partners,” Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska said in a statement. “No one should pretend to be surprised when girls and women are brutalized. And no one should pretend to be surprised when the Taliban yet again provides safe harbor to terrorists plotting international attacks.”"

Fuck you Ben Sasse, and your traitorous clan. You go fight then.

"In a blunt assessment, Afghan Foreign Minister Mohammed Haneef Atmar said Wednesday that his government is “probably experiencing the most massive, brutal and opportunistic military campaign of violence and terror, by the Taliban, in the history of our country.”"

Well, ya better suit up then buttercup because war ain't easy and if you let the Taliban steal everything you won't have equipment either.

Just like Covid...I am not sending a damn thing to "Prince Variant" or his traitor sycophants. Not their voters, not their supporters or anyone that remotely associates with them. It's another "lost cause" and they are clearly willing to die and make you miserable along the way. And if they don't have insurance? Send them to a church. It's the way of the cult medical pros like Ron Paul.

It's the same thing Charlie is saying. Fuck em'...Let em' deal with it we are outta here. Goodbye shithole states and the little nugget peoples that swirl the bowl.

  3. Obviously, the cult of Drumpf hate the liberal progressive democrats so much that they would prefer living under a autocratic ultra conservative regimes dictatorship. They are uninformed fools in their delusion.

They are willing to discard 240 years of democracy and all the benefits our great nation has successfully defended to maintain control of government by the people, not to succumb to rule from a militarized tyrant.

I want my grandchildren to enjoy living in a future of liberty and equality under the government envisioned by our founders and all the heroic citizens who have given their lives to defend democracy.

  7. I drove over to Lake Wenatchee on Sunday to visit my best friend of 50 years and her partner, listening to NPR on my car radio to a story about a girl who was about to be a Sophomore in high school. She talked about how, as an 8th grader when the pandemic struck, she'd been a good student and avid sports person, involved on several teams. Forced to stay home, she devised a nutrition and workout schedule that escalated over the months and eventually, spiraled into anorexia. She hid it from her mom as long as she could, but mom figured it out and started to get her medical and psychological help. What she said that really hit me, was "the pandemic changed me".

It made me realize, the pandemic changed me too. Normally, I'd be excited to drive over and see my best friend. This time, I had to keep talking myself into it. I'm normally very social and gregarious, and I'm not that way anymore. I'm cautious. I'm fearful. I'm wary of people. I'm worried. And it's not that I was never any of those things before, but now they are pronounced and not fleeting or secondary. Don't worry, I have a doctor appointment on Monday and I'm not having any desperate or dangerous thoughts. I'm just not myself. The pandemic changed me. The last five years changed me.

Like Skyriver said, I can't bring myself to sympathize with fools. I'm sick and tired of changing my life because people are selfish and ignorant.

Welcome back Dr. Schwab. Sorry for the emotional dump!

    1. Part 1:

Imagine being at your old job and dealing with kids waiting for their classmates to die.

If you know anyone in the business you might think about reaching out to them once you get better. I think your story needs to be heard. We all feel the same way.

I am on the bus. It sucks. Everytime I get on there's someone not wearing a mask and the driver pretends to ignore it. I put my earbuds in and close my eyes and try not to think about anything. I mean blank page thoughts about nuthin's about nuthin'. I used to talk to everyone and anyone. I get the whole bus laughing every time I am on it. Folks love seeing me,...or they did. Now I tell the driver X isn't wearing their mask as I get on. And grit my teeth. It's TOO LATE! The bus is full of viruses!

      Now?

I am aggressive as (insert cuss here)! If you don't wear your mask on the bus and refuse to, there's gonna be a problem.

-Oddly, I am now at odds with everyone! I AM THE PROBLEM! I AM TOLD TO SHUT UP!. I got people calling the cops on me while sitting at the bus stop. Suddenly surrounded by cops. It's called being "S.W.A.T.ed" I am a violent person arguing with a purple haired girl. All I did was bury my head on the bus, got off, got Micky D's and went back to the stop to go back. Didn't even SEE a person. But they blocked off Riverside Dr. at Kohl's and had cops sneak up behind me. Full on ambush.

I had a guy tell me to "Shut up before you get hurt" after I politely asked him to put his mask on and let him know eating on the bus was against the rules as well. (pointed at the signs in front of him). He got to ride, I was grilled by the cops and the bus security for 45 minutes and had to take a bus that came 1 hr. 15 min after my original. My groceries were ruined including 15 bucks of ice cream I give the kids around here cuz it's section 8 and they can't afford the ice cream man and their parents are never home either and can't afford it if they did. All that good will killed cuz someone claims to be "attacked" when called on their shit politely. When in fact they themselves are attacking everything in sight.

It's called "Fight or Flight". We ALL have this and it's triggered by covid. It's like banging your fists on a piano all day long. So this makes me angry and short tempered like everyone else. Except I am ultimately victimized over and over and over until I "shut up".

The cops won't talk. They are a liability and know it. The bus folks won't. They messed up and regret it now and it's silence from them now too.

Ya see? I am right, they know they are wrong but here I am. Still on the bus. Getting exposed to Covid and the corrupt law enforcements incestuous relationships with EVERYONE including the bus people. Gotta cover up your mistakes or get sued right? Lots of bad press. Pesky overseers to make sure rules are followed from then on. Bias training, on and on. So instead, they turn it on you.

    2. Part 2

I could go on about being followed and attempts on my life but...Yeah, that's my life every time I leave the house and when I am sitting in my house. So 24/7/365 no touch harassments. Imagine seeing people knocking on your door with a shotgun waiting for you to open it. Cops didn't bat an eye at the footage. It was like nothing happened. Same when I was shot asleep in my bed. 3 days later the detective shows at the house. Didn't seem the bit concerned at all.

Anyone who might try getting involved on my behalf gets the same treatment. People are cowards and usually help the cops. They know I am coming for them. So they try to dirty me up. Rough me up physically and mentally. That way they can say "See, he's always a mess"...then lie to fill in the needed points. They are cops. "Testiliars" Cops are the biggest liars I know. It's a point of pride.

Hang in there kid. You are doing all the right things. What you feel is normal. However, some Lorazepam never hurt a thing. I can't take it because of my pain meds, they conflict and I could stop breathing. But when I did, things were much easier to deal with and no dumb drowsy feeling. My Mom took them like candy when she was dying and it helped. They have "right to die" laws in CA. It helped her die comfortably.

As you found, it's impossible to deal with alone. It's that way for everyone. The "other side" will NEVER ask for help and quit their harassments. They will only get worse. Think about what that means for you and adjust accordingly. Right is right, wrong is wrong. Life and death matters.

    3. Oh Smooth. What a s#!T show. Now there's a county-wide indoor mask mandate again so maybe---MAYBE--people will wise up? As for me, I'm already on anti-depressants (for 20 years!) and I know this is not lasting. I'm really going for my yearly checkup and to actually meet my new doctor face-to-face. Last year we just did a video appointment. This time, as I always do, I'll go with my list of questions and symptoms/ updates for her. It will be thrilling! I'll get my bloodwork done, maybe get updated x-rays to see how my arthritis is progressing, have her look at a little mole on my chest. I'm really fine, just perhaps more introspective than I've been in a long time. Maybe it's retirement? Maybe it's true inner searching? Maybe it's just turning into the cranky old woman I was meant to be.

Here's how you'll know me: I'll be the one in mismatched clothes that need washing, standing on the street corner in DT Everett, yelling at people as they go by. You'll know me by the cigarette in-hand and the dowager's hump!

Sigh...just kidding. I look forward to feeling comfortable going to the YMCA again. I love that you buy ice cream for your neighborhood kids. You're the guy they'll all remember when they get older.

It's our favorite cryptoracist doing the "waddabout" with the governor of 'merica's tiny penis, Florida.

Notice how he introduces Mika as "Joe Scarborough's 3rd wife"...Then puts her down for being upset after the clip. Nope, no misogyny to see here...

It is much like the treatment I get daily, only I am as polite and neutral as you can get. "Hey brother, could you pull your mask up please?" Deadpanned simple ask. Then repeatedly attacked for simply asking.

The statistics are never actually discussed...

The CDC made an error. Combined 3 days of data into two days. It was 30% over what it should have been in cases diagnosed, deaths etc. What they don't mention is even if it's corrected, Florida is still the problem at record levels.

Also, we can only hope everyone moves to Florida. PLEASE!!!! Oh please make it so.

    5. Thank you for the nice 'werds' as Chris Ballew would say ;o)

I live in section 8 family housing at the moment. There's row of apartments 10 on on side and 10 on the other. Driveway and parking in the middle. So I have 20 sliding doors into the patio/yard area. All the kids play there. So when they see me coming home from the store they know I had to have stocked up...lol
They all have to ask their parents before they can have ice cream. I usually do it when I hear the ice cream man. Long story there,....lol...But usually it's on hot days or if I hear a bunch of kids out back. The last hottest days everyone was inside. It was weird.

But yeah, I poke my head out the slider and the nearest kid grabs it and hands them out for me. They are so good with each other. I've been here 8 years and there's never a problem. When I coached I told the parents 1st thing 1st moment in time. "This is the kids club, not the parents. Parents are club supporters." "If we left them here they would play till they couldn't see the ball and never have a problem. It's always the parents that mess things up."

And there's one every year. lolol...Every year. The good news is all my parents are first timers and that travels well as the kids progress up in ranks. But the kids are always fine.

It's the one thing I will miss moving from here. The kids playing outside. Kids laughing really can lift your spirits.

  8. I was surprised and happy to see your writing this morning, but noted that it isn't in The Herald. Does this suggest that your return is not all that far away?'

I have a niece who is a young nurse who refuses to be vaccinated for Covid-19. She's restricted to only certain areas in the hospital where she works. Her reasoning is that she believes that the Covid vaccines present a non-zero risk of being unable to have children. I don't believe that there's any evidence to support that thinking, but of course, the same risk from a Covid infection is definitely greater than zero. I blame social media.

Another non-zero probability is that under DeSantis' Brylcream hairstyle, should we be given an opportunity to look, we would find two small, bony protrusions.

"A recent poll asked the provocative question: Who do you blame that we’re right back in the thick of this mess again? It’s the unvaccinated who are at fault, the vaccinated answered. While the unvaccinated pointed the finger at anybody but themselves — at “foreign travelers entering the U.S.,” at “the mainstream media,” at Joe Biden."

"To those who say “mocking those people will never convince them to take the vaccine!”, let me suggest that it’s too late to persuade them. I’m not talking about the hesitant and the uncertain — they can be persuaded, and we need to redouble efforts to reach them. But when you see that in Mississippi — which like many states with low vaccination rates is now being ravaged by the delta variant — the state’s chief public health official felt compelled to make a public plea for people to stop drinking livestock dewormer, since a good number got the idea that it’s a treatment for covid, you have to ask if there’s anything at all that would persuade committed refusers."
